MOMENT Contemporary Art Center is pleased to present “POST HUIS CLOS”, a solo exhibition by Montreal-based photographer Serge Clément, on view from April 18 (Fri) to July 13 (Sun), 2025.
Since the 1970s, Clément has developed a photographic practice rooted in the overlooked and chaotic aspects of urban daily life. His images evoke fragmented memories hidden within the everyday. In this exhibition, thirty black-and-white photographs taken in Montreal before and after the COVID-19 pandemic will be presented.
These images—ranging from graffiti on walls, patterns cast by shadows, to layered scenes seen through glass—are fragments dispersed across the urban landscape. Through Clément’s fictionalized gaze, they are reassembled into a world where reality and fiction intertwine, evoking moments that feel like fragments of a larger narrative. His practice, which reframes the familiar through an estranged perspective, may be understood as an open-ended response to the enclosed reality (huis clos) of a pandemic-stricken society.
In addition, a selection of video works—based on photographs Clément captured in various cities—will be screened throughout the exhibition. During the exhibition period, the artist will also spend time in Nara, where he will continue to develop the project by adding new works on an ongoing basis.
In conjunction with this exhibition, Clément’s works will also be exhibited in FOTOZOFIO, an art project dedicated to photographers and filmmakers over the age of 50. We warmly invite you to experience the exhibition at MOMENT Contemporary Art Center in Nara. We also encourage you to visit the related programs in Kyoto.
