Fanny Terno

Fanny TERNO

Fanny Terno (b. 1992, Monaco) is an artist and researcher living and working between Kyoto and Monaco. With a background in photography, her practice moves across installation, objects and performance. Informed by her doctoral research into the relationships between images and their milieu (Images de la mésologie, mésologie de l’image, PhD thesis, 2024), she considers an image not as an autonomous representation, but as something that emerges through ecological, technical and symbolic relations.

Using photography, mirrors, textiles, light and relational modes of display, Terno creates situations that temporarily withdraw the world from immediate availability. By interrupting habitual modes of perception, her work invites viewers to “re-garder”: to look again, but also to keep, attend to and care for what appears. Images are never given in their entirety; they emerge, change or recede according to light, time and the viewer’s position. She conceives the exhibition itself as one of the conditions through which the artwork takes form, rather than as a fixed framework for its presentation.

After studying textiles at École Duperré in Paris, Terno graduated from the École nationale supérieure de la photographie in Arles. In 2024, she received a practice-based doctorate from Aix-Marseille University and the École nationale supérieure de la photographie. She moved to Japan in 2021 as a Japanese Government MEXT Scholar and completed a doctorate in sculpture at Kyoto City University of Arts in 2026. She currently teaches at Ryukoku University.

Terno has studied the Hosokawa Honryū tradition of tea since 2021. She approaches sadō as a sensory and relational dispositif capable of transforming the conditions of visibility and attention. The tea room and the camera obscura recur in her work as spaces that restrict light and reorganise our relationship with the outside world. Since 2021, she has been developing Shashin-an in Izu countryside, a work combining a tea room and a camera obscura.

Recent projects include Monomi III at Nuit Blanche Kyoto 2024; the solo exhibitions Blink / 瞬き at Tsubomidō, Kyoto, in 2025, and TOKONOMA SYNDROME: OBJECTA at PERIDOT ART CENTER, Osaka, in 2026; as well as a residency at LAiR Kanazawa and a performance at Villa Kujoyama in 2026.
